Another superlative CTA excursion through the very heart of the Coral Triangle! We are just back from our latest journey through the islands of Raja Ampat and we’re still bathing in the afterglow of the experience. Our trip began with wonderful weather and though we had a bit of rain here and there during the course of the route that never took away from the area’s magnificent underwater backdrops. Raja Ampat covers a massive area with hundreds of islands so it could never be adequately covered during just one snorkeling trip. Thus, we decided to focus on the northern islands above Sorong and charted a unique route that took us through the area’s wide-ranging marine habitats. Table corals Wayag Islands Every one of CTA’s trips is an exclusively-crafted itinerary, specific to the locale, the weather, the marine life and the underwater conditions. From Sorong we headed into the blue waters along northern Batanta then sailed along western Waigeo and across the equator to the spectacular limestone islands of Wayag. Working our way back down towards the famed and fishy waters of the Dampier Strait we explored off-the-beaten-path reefs that offered up some unbelievable and unforgettable gems. A few of the numerous highlights from this adventure include watching an incredibly rare Hairy octopus’ escapades, finding a trio of minute Crinoid cuttlefish fight for the right to mate with a female, and watching the shy behaviors of one of the most extraordinary reef fish in these waters, a Picturesque dragonet. As always we were able to find a plethora of vibrant nudibranchs and other bizarrely-colored invertebrates but we also had some time to watch the behaviors of big fish, such as bumphead parrotfish feeding, tasseled wobbeong sharks camouflaging themselves on the seafloor, and huge resident manta rays visiting their cleaning stations. Uma vez em Waisai, você terá que solicitar ao hotel pra te pegarem no porto ou no aeroporto. Melhor época para visitar? Você pode visitar Raja Ampat durante todo o ano, mas leve em conta que é uma região com clima tropical, e não tem dias do ano que você assegure que não irá chover. Embora haja menos chances de chuva de Outubro a Abril, ocorrem fortes pancadas de chuvas em Dezembro e Janeiro. Se você estiver planejando mergulhar em Raja Ampat a melhor época é de meados de Outubro à meados de Dezembro, quando o mar está calmo, praticamente não chove e não venta. Evite o período que vai da metade de Junho ao meio de Setembro pois o mar está agitado e chove bastante. Eu visitei Raja Ampat no final de Fevereiro, e cheguei lá debaixo de uma tempestade que não dava pra ver nada. No dia seguinte ainda choveu, mas nos outros três dias o tempo estava bom. Boa Viagem ☺ One of the main coral reefs at Raja Ampat, an Indonesian island chain home to perhaps the world’s richest marine biodiversity, was severely damaged last week when a Bahamian-flagged cruise ship smashed into it at low tide, according to an official 90-meter Caledonian Sky, owned by tour operator Noble Caledonia, ran aground in an uncharted shoal in West Papua province after completing a bird-watching trip on Waigeo Island on 4 British-owned company described the incident as “unfortunate” and said it was “cooperating fully with the relevant authorities”.
